Too many people with diabetes suffer from serious health complications because they can’t access life-saving devices. Over 34 million people in the US have diabetes and every one of them has a right to the tools needed to manage the life-threatening disease.
Tell your lawmakers that everyone with diabetes should have access to a CGM by signing this petition now.
Underserved populations, including racial and ethnic minorities and low-income individuals, have the highest rates of diabetes-related health complications, yet have the most limited access to life-saving diabetes devices. Race/ethnicity and income should not be a barrier to care for people with diabetes.
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) have proven to help people with diabetes by providing real-time health data to inform their diabetes decision-making. This data helps people with diabetes improve their blood glucose levels and reduce the risk of diabetes complications such as heart and liver disease. These devices can transform care for people living with diabetes, especially those using insulin, by enabling them to make life-altering choices day-to-day.
The majority of Medicaid programs do not cover CGMs for all people with diabetes on insulin. Among the millions of Americans with diabetes, some have access to life-saving devices like CGMs through Medicaid, but the vast majority of Americans do not. Access to these tools is a right every person with diabetes should have, regardless of one’s race/ethnicity or socioeconomic status.
Only 27 states cover CGMs for all adults with diabetes on insulin. 15 states cover CGMs for people with type 1 diabetes only, 2 states cover CGMs for children only, and 6 states do not cover these devices at all. The majority of Americans on Medicaid cannot access these life-saving devices due to cost barriers.
Join us in advocating for all states to cover CGMs through Medicaid for people with diabetes on insulin. CGMs help save lives. It’s time everyone has access to the tools they need to survive.
